Srinagar, Apr 04 (KNO): With tourist footfall rising and pressure on civic infrastructure mounting, the Traders Association Lal Chowk on Saturday pitched for a comprehensive revamp of the city’s commercial hub during a meeting with the Divisional Commissioner, Srinagar, securing an assurance of phased, time-bound action.
The delegation, led by President Mohammad Iqbal Khan and comprising members Jatinder Singh, Naresh Kumar Mehra and Nisar Ahmad Bhat, as per details available with the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), raised a series of issues ranging from urban planning gaps and traffic congestion to sanitation, pedestrian access and overall aesthetics.
“Lal Chowk is the face of Srinagar’s economy and culture. But without planned development and efficient civic management, the pressure of increasing business and tourism is clearly showing,” Khan said.
He stressed that the area requires structured urban planning, streamlined traffic and pedestrian movement and sustained beautification to match its growing importance as both a business district and a tourist destination.
“We are not just asking for fixes, we are seeking a long-term, coordinated vision that makes Lal Chowk organized, accessible and truly tourist-friendly,” he added.
As per the details, the association said peak-hour congestion, inconsistent sanitation and lack of coordinated infrastructure upgrades are affecting both traders and visitors, particularly as Srinagar witnesses a steady surge in tourist arrivals.
The traders said the Divisional Commissioner gave a patient hearing to their concerns and assured that the issues would be addressed systematically in a phased and time-bound manner.
“The response was positive. We have been assured that concrete steps will follow, and we expect visible improvements on the ground in due course,” Khan said.
